2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.

Several the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
