Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
