Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
